Just one year ago, players everywhere joined the heroic team of mutants, the X-Men, in their struggle to save the world when X-Men: Mutant Insurrection hit store shelves. Since that day, loads of players have battled the likes of Magneto and the Hellfire Club alongside iconic X-Men, such as Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and Phoenix.

Today, we’d like to take a brief look back at this exciting game and shout out a few of the folks who helped bring it to life!

Of Dice and X-Men

For those of you not in the know, in every game of X-Men: Mutant Insurrection, your goal is to complete a series of objectives in preparation for the final showdown against one of the X-Men’s iconic foes. You and up to five other players each choose one of sixteen mutants to play as, each of them boasting their own unique talents and dice combinations.

In order to complete the objectives on a mission, you’ll roll the dice on your mutant’s power card and match the symbols rolled to the symbols on the mission card. Since the X-Men are always working together, another hero on the same mission as you can diversify your dice pool and give you new abilities by lending you their assist card.

In this example, Wolverine is lending Cyclops a red and blue die, and the ability “Fastball Special.”

Complete enough missions, and you can challenge the villain in the final showdown. Defeat the villain, and you win the game! Of course, just completing the missions won’t be enough to save the day; you also have to complete them quickly. The game features a threat track that gradually counts up as you play, and if the threat level would ever be raised above 15, it’s game over. 

Here we have the final showdown versus Dark Phoenix. The X-Men have their work cut out for them!

There are many people who worked together to bring this exciting game to life, and today we would like to provide a quick shoutout to three of them.

First off are, of course, the designers of the game: Richard Launius and Brandon Perdue. The ideas and mechanics brought to the table by these two minds provide a terrific retelling of the tale of the X-Men and their struggles to protect a world that despises them. The core experience of X-Men: Mutant Insurrection is largely due to Launius and Perdue’s game design chops, but there is another experienced game maker who contributed as well: Reiner Knizia. A longtime designer with over 600 published games to his name, Knizia is the one who inspired the dice mechanic that is so central to Mutant Insurrection and how it is played. The game wouldn’t be the same without him!

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the Ironheart Hero Pack for Marvel Champions: The Card Game!

This high-tech hero boosts into battle in this expansion pack, which introduces Ironheart as a new playable hero along with her fifteen signature cards. With a pre-built Leadership deck ready to play from the get-go, you’ll be able to face down villains with Ironheart’s arsenal of armors from the moment you open the box. With the unique ability to gradually and permanently “level up” her armor for the rest of the scenario, Ironheart is a fantastic hero who can put in serious work for any team.

This hero pack also includes a bonus modular set featuring the bizarre electromagnetic intelligence, Zzzax!

Stroke of Genius

Right off the bat, it’s clear that Ironheart is a particularly unique hero for one major reason: she has three identity cards!

This trio of identities represents

’ (Ironheart, 1B) journey to perfect her armor and her growth as a hero over time. At the start of the scenario, you will only have access to

(Ironheart, 1A) of the Ironheart suit, which is relatively weak in terms of its capabilities. However, by using Riri’s Child Prodigy ability to build up progress counters, you can Level Up the suit to

(Ironheart, 2A). Now Ironheart is a little bit stronger, and

(Ironheart, 2B) has gotten a little bit better at building her suit—notice how her second version of Child Prodigy is slightly different than the first. If Riri manages to build up enough progress counters to upgrade her suit again, then you will obtain the

(Ironheart, 3A) armor, which is incredibly powerful.

With so much incentive to upgrade your armor, it makes sense that you will want to build up progress counters as fast as possible. Fortunately, Ironheart has access to more than one method of accumulating these counters. Cards like

(Ironheart, 5) and

(Ironheart, 6) provide some progress while also thwarting and attacking respectively, while

(Ironheart, 9) can net you a progress counter while paying for other cards (or two counters, if you use it to pay for Child Prodigy). Once you’ve upgraded your armor, take advantage of cards that scale off its Version number, such as

(Ironheart, 7) and

(Ironheart, 12), to truly steamroll the enemy!

To synergize with her unique capabilities, Ironheart comes with a pre-built Leadership deck full of fellow members of the Champions, each of them able to support both her and each other. Once Ironheart has reached at least Version 2, call on

(Ironheart, 14) to boost her THW and deal with any of the villain’s schemes that may have built up while you were busy upgrading. Use

(Ironheart, 15) to get multiple uses out of Ironheart on your turn, while

(Ironheart, 23) can fill any role you need once you bring her into play. If you have the resources, call on

(Ironheart, 16) to boost your stats and then

(Ironheart, 17) to deal massive damage to the enemy—with the boost from Patriot combined with Version 3 Ironheart’s stats, this ends up being a whopping 11 damage! That said, if you’re unable to go on the offensive like that, then go on the defensive instead with

(Ironheart, 25) to keep yourself and your allies safe from harm for the rest of the round.

Supercharged Foe

Like with the Nova Hero Pack we announced previously, Ironheart also comes with a bonus modular encounter set. This set features the strange

(Ironheart, 37), a creature of sentient energy that gets more dangerous the more “energy” resources you have. Cards like

(Ironheart, 39) and

(Ironheart, 36) will punish heroes for having too many “energy” resources on the cards they control and in their hand, while

(Ironheart, 38) ensures that not even the heroes who focus on other resource types are completely safe.

Like all other modular encounter sets, the Zzzax set can be added to any scenario for some extra challenge. Can you fend off this being of living energy?

Ironclad Champion

With the ability to upgrade her suit and lead her fellow Champions to victory, Ironheart is a spectacular hero and a valuable member of any team. Look forward to taking on the Sinister Six with Ironheart when the Ironheart Hero Pack arrives this May!

Like a Human Rocket

When he’s not fighting crime,

(Nova, 1B) is like any other teenage boy. But when trouble rears its head, Sam can search his deck for his signature

(Nova, 9), the source of his powers and the cornerstone of his playstyle. If he uses a “wild” resource to pay for his ability, then the helmet goes directly into play, allowing him to launch into battle with little to no setup time!

In his hero form,

(Nova, 1A) is a powerful burst character with lots of low-cost events. The Supernova Helmet is the only upgrade among his signature cards, and with its ability to consistently generate “wild” resources, Nova can use it to pay for cards like

(Nova, 4) and

(Nova, 5) without sacrificing any other cards from his hand. With

(Nova, 2) letting you get multiple uses out of the same event and Nova’s innate ability letting you ready his helmet, you’ll start stacking up threat removal and damage before you even know it. If you’re ready to clear out lots of minions or side schemes, then be sure to

(Nova, 6) to gain unstoppable momentum. Even if you’ve completely exhausted your Supernova Helmet, you can still utilize your

(Nova, 7) to help pay for your events, which means Nova will almost always be ready for some serious burst power.

The rest of Nova’s pre-built deck perfectly complements his playstyle. With

(Nova, 10) on hand, you can get multiple uses out of Aggression events like

(Nova, 12) and

(Nova, 14). Utilize

(Nova, 16) to take advantage of all the Attack events you’ll be playing, and if you ever need to switch to alter-ego form, you can use

(Nova, 19) to help pay for another player’s card and keep the momentum going. The high amount of “wild” resources in Nova’s deck can also help you pay for cards like

(Nova, 13), which requires that you spend at least one “physical” resource in order to play it—since “wild” resources count as all resource types, you can always fall back on the Supernova Helmet to help you pay for it!

Tough as Nails

As we mentioned earlier, the Nova Hero Pack is the first hero pack that also comes with a bonus modular encounter set! This set features the ultra-tough

(Nova, 29), a Brute minion with the unique ability to stack up multiple tough status cards at once. Only one tough status card is discarded when Armadillo would take damage (unless the attack has piercing), which means the more times you let him activate, the harder he becomes to defeat! Armadillo on his own is already “tough” to deal with, but with cards like

(Nova, 30) and

(Nova, 32) also added to the mix, it’s clear that this encounter set can make any situation significantly harder!

Like all other modular encounter sets, the Armadillo set can be added to any scenario for some extra challenge. Test your mettle and see if you can defeat this resilient foe!

Nova Corps Champion

With unlimited burst potential and some wild thrills, Nova is a fantastic hero eager to join his fellow Champions in the battle against the Sinister Six. Look forward to adding Nova to your team when the Nova Hero Pack arrives in May!
